Luther Robinson, Sr.

Luther Robinson Sr. lived a very long and richly filled life of family love and dedication. Luther Sr. grew up in Mullins, South Carolina as a child. He was born to Ben and Josephine Robinson on January 5, 1929. He was raised by his stepfather Bubba Swinton. Luther would later move to Virginia with his uncle to work. Luther would go on and learn his master trade and became one of the most sought after cement finishers in Tidewater. Working for Aldo Construction and many years with Tidewater Construction. His master cement work appears to this day at several major locations around the Tidewater area. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge, the Downtown Tunnel and the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel. He worked at several local gas stations called Miller Marts at the time. He was a member of the local concrete union on 25th street in Norfolk. He worked for Palmer Cherry. Where they did work at Sleepy Hole Park in Suffolk City. His work can also be seen at the Indian River Park in Chesapeake. He laid cement and strictly managed the entire process there. The entire picnic table areas are from his work. All over Tidewater, Luther’s work can be seen to this day. Anyone will tell you, he paid attention to detail and was prideful of his work. He never cut corners and it wasn’t done until it was done right. Most say he was hard to get along with but he took his work serious and those who worked with him knew that from the start. He was well respected by all because of his A1 work ethic. Luther had a long history with alcoholism. Like always, with family and many prayers that battle was won and he remained alcohol free for over 30 years. Luther didn’t require much in life. He loved his large family. His wife Dorothy of 65 years until her 2019 passing was his everything. His large family consisted of 9 children. Where he would live and raise his children in Portsmouth, VA on the same street for close to 50 years. Daughter’s: Paula (pre-deceased) and Frances (pre-deceased 2 days after birth), Cheryl and Janet (Robert) Son’s: Luther Jr. and Jerry (pre-deceased), Samuel, Alfred and Robert. 14 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 7 great- great grandchildren.
