Chief George Johnson, Jr.

On Thursday, March 12, 2026, God chose to call our beloved George Johnson, Jr to eternal rest. George was born September 30, 1936, in Durham, North Carolina to the late George Henry Johnson and Minnie Trice. George graduated from Hillside High School in Durham North Carolina. Shortly after graduation, he proudly enlisted in the United States Navy in January 1955. During his service, he also enjoyed playing semi-pro football. After faithfully serving his country for 8 years in the United States Navy, George met and married Ola (Teresa) Mae Handon, the love of his life and relocated to Virginia. Their beautiful union of love and devotion lasted 63 years and was blessed with three loving children. George retired after 22 years of service as Master Chief Petty Officer. Later he attended St Leo College as he began working at NNSY for 18 years where he retired a second time. Even in retirement, George remained active in his community. He worked at Centenary United Methodist Church in Portsmouth, Virginia. George was a proud and faithful member of American Legion Post #190 in Portsmouth, Virginia. George also devoted his time to doing neighborhood watch for his Cavalier Manor community. George was preceded in death by his sister Margaret Johnson and Nephew Frankie Johnson. George leaves to cherish his precious memory his loving wife of 63 years, Mrs. Ola (Teresa) Johnson, Two daughters: Denise Johnson of Portsmouth, Virginia, and Minette Johnson of Richmond, Virginia; and one son, George Johnson of Chesapeake Virginia. Four grandchildren: Shantera Lewis, Kalita Foster, Jayla Eure, D’Mario Eure; six great-grandchildren: Kamani Jackson, Rodney Smith, Braedyn Newsome, Skylar Eure, Jermany Nixon, and Scotlynn Eure. Three adopted daughters, Gisele, Drew and Pamela; and Two adopted sons, Christopher and Richard, one god daughter: Joyner Stephenson, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. George was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. His kindness, strength, and commitment to service left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. The family is forever grateful for blessing us with such an extraordinary man. George will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love, faith, and service will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Rest well until we meet again.
