Cora J. Head

Mother Cora J. Head was the youngest of eight children born August 23, 1932 to Richard and Martha Johnson in Norfolk County Virginia. Her birth mother died when she was two years old. Her father remarried to Rosa Lee Gray, together they raised her and taught her all she knew. She attended the Public Schools there in Norfolk County. Early employment was at the Planters Company in VA harvesting peanuts and making baskets. In November 1963 she moved to New Jersey, and gained employment at the Lyons VA Hospital, Lyons, NJ beginning a 37 years and 8 months career as a Nurse’s Assistant. She also served private patients from time to time. Then retired in 2000. It was at Lyons where the eyes of a gentleman L.W. Head fell on her. He said to her if anyone asks you if you are married tell them yes. On October 2, 1973 they married. For 45 years they affectionately referred to each other as “Baby.” Mother Head began church work early in life. At the age of 8 her first duty was collecting Sunday School Offerings. She served in the Methodist Church then later was saved in the Church of God in Christ. She was a diligent worker as a Missionary, Evangelist, and Pastor’s Aide. While attending Bible Study at Bethesda Church under the teachings of Overseer Nathaniel Screven she hosted a luncheon where she met Pastor Richard F. Christmas. She became the Charter Member of Whosoever Will Church CKMI, Mother Head was serious about her walk with Christ. Mother not only preached The Word, she lived the life she spoke of. Witnessing by telling others everywhere she went, and spoke to whomever she could, telling them of the Goodness of The Lord Jesus. Mother worked with the Food Pantry purchasing and packing bags of groceries, then dispensing them on Saturday mornings. Mother was a supporter of the annual A2K Diabetes Benefit and donated crocheted blankets for the event. After the passing of Overseer Christmas, she joyfully received Superintendent John C. Arnold as her Pastor at Whosoever Will Church CKMI in Plainfield NJ and worked just as diligently under his leadership. Many are the recipients of the kindnesses, Godly Love, and generosity from the one and only Mother Cora J. Head. With the heart of Dorcas, she gave to many. From hand-crocheted blankets and dresses to newborns, to housewarming gifts, Mother gave with love. Mother worked for months on her God-given mission, and donated beautiful hand crocheted blankets to be given to those in “cold hospital rooms” she said. She presented nine to her Pastor John C. Arnold, Jr. and nine to her Bishop Charles W. Harris Jr. Mother Head finished her course on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 and leaves to mourn, her beloved husband, L.W. Head, and two daughters, Linda McCants (Fred), Vivian Hawkins, brothers-in-law, Therlo Head, Jr. (deceased), Will Head (Button), and sisters-in-law, Nellie Mae Hollowell, Dorothy Johnson and Pauline Johnson. The Special Extended Council Family parents Mattie & Norman Council (deceased), Deloris Crosse (Arthur), Frederick Council, Richard Cleveland (deceased) (Yvonne); Grandchildren: Keith McCants (deceased) (Tonya), Kenneth McCants (Ashlee), Dwayne Moore (Temaris); recognition of Kelly and Lisa, 11 great grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, the Johnson Clan, a host of Nieces, Nephews, other relatives and friends, Whosoever Will Church Family and the CKMI Family.
