Beatrice Virginia Hawkins

On September 28, 2016, God called Beatrice Virginia Hall Hawkins home. Beatrice was one of two children born to the late Joseph Simon Hall and Josephine Smith Hall Whitehead on April 25, 1924, in Portsmouth, Virginia. Beatrice married the late Jack Clinton Hawkins, Sr. in 1941, and they were happily married for 54 years. From this union, six children were born and reared in love. Beatrice was a member of Community Presbyterian Church for over 55 years, where she served as a deacon, member of Phoebe Circle, and on numerous committees over time. She truly loved the Lord and did not waiver in giving him praise and thanksgiving. She was a “God fearing”, virtuous and humble woman, with a sweet spirit and a giant heart. She took advantage of every opportunity to pray for and with others, offer words of encouragement and share the Gospel. She had a magical way of making everyone she came in contact with feel special; or, she would call them “precious” with a smile that could light a room. Momma, Grandma, Sister and “Ms Bea”, as she was affectionately known, was educated in Portsmouth Public Schools. She was a certified hair stylist who took pride in the works of this art; and in her early years, she was often called the “Saturday Neighborhood Beautician”. She retired from Portsmouth Public Schools as a lead custodian after 18 years of service, and began to enjoy spending more time with family, especially her grandchildren. She also took time to enjoy cooking, taking trips with family members and the simple pleasures of life. Beatrice was preceded in death by her parents and husband; daughters, Rita M. Holmes and Marilyn B. Drewrey; and brother, Joseph R. Hall. She leaves to cherish her memory and honor her legacy; daughters, Dr. Patricia H. Fisher (Tony) of Portsmouth and Dr. Shirley Hawkins-Brown (Darryl) of Virginia Beach; sons, Jack C. Hawkins, Jr. (Mildred) and Calvin S. Hawkins of Portsmouth; sons in law, Jerome Holmes and Russell Drewrey; grandchildren, Nichol Fisher (Jeffrey), Kelsey Hawkins, Shanetta Woods (Kenny), Jewrell Wright, Anthony Hawkins, Tarnesha McCrary (Commodore), Fallon Harris, Geri Drewrey, Jarrett Holmes (Tee), and Evan Drewrey; 12 great- grandchildren; sister in law, Mildred Cox; a niece; special neighbors, Charles and Thelma Crocker; and a host of relatives and friends.
