Valerie Bynum

Valerie Denise Bynum, 65, was called from labor to rest and went home to be with The Lord on Sunday, June 7, 2020 at her home after a brief illness. Valerie was born on February 21, 1955 to Roy T. Smith Sr. and Golethia Burton Smith. A native of Portsmouth, she graduated from Portsmouth Public Schools in 1973. Valerie had a special love for cooking and serving others. She was previously employed in the Food Service field at Frank’s Truck Stop, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, and retired as Food Service Director at Chesapeake Place Assisted Living. Valerie accepted the Lord as her Savior at a very young age. She was a dedicated servant. She truly loved the Lord with her whole heart and she displayed it every day. Valerie has led many people to Christ. She was also a great Encourager to those who needed a kind word, needed uplifting or a mighty word from the Lord. In 1996 under the leadership of Pastor Bonner while interceding for others, Valerie heard the call into what she learned later was into ministry. This call came while laying before the Lord. Valerie was given scripture as well as told to go and preach God’s Word. Needing confirmation, Valerie went to Pastor Bonner who in turn told her to go back and pray to get a confirmation. She did and the call was confirmed by God and Pastor Bonner. Valerie walked in her calling for one year. On September 18, 1997, Valerie gave my initial sermon in Petersburg, VA. Valerie was an active member of Parkway Christian Center where she was loved by many and served the Lord in many capacities. She loved working with everyone in the ministry and was always willing to help wherever she was needed. Valerie was preceded in death by her son Derrick Wilson and her father Roy T. Smith Sr. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Willie Bynum; son Anthony Wilson (Monique); her mother, Golethia Smith; granddaughters, Kailan Wilson and Kyra Wilson; sisters, Cora Freeman (Ray), Cheryl Smith, and Wanda Smith, brother, Roy Smith Jr., nieces, a nephew, great nieces, and a host of cousins and friends.
