James Richard Hoskie Jr.

On Saturday, July 18, 2015, our beloved husband and father, James R. Hoskie, entered peacefully into his heavenly home. James, whom many called Richard, was born on April 28, 1943, in Aulander, North Carolina, to the late James R. Hoskie Sr. and Cladie Marsh. The family moved to Portsmouth, Virginia, in 1955. After graduating from I. C. Norcom High School, he attended Norfolk State University until called into the military. Before assuming duties with the Army, he married Joyce Jones, his high school sweetheart. From this union, two children, James Richard III and Michelle, were born. After serving in Vietnam, he returned to Portsmouth and began a career in the Norfolk Naval shipyard where he worked as a nuclear controller, retiring with over twenty-five years of service. Richard was a true Bible scholar who took great pleasure in deep discussions about his faith. Though he was outspoken and opinionated, Richard had a softer side that he seldom revealed to others. Richard was a loving father and a doting grandfather who took pride in putting together Christmas toys for his children and grandchildren, and making sure they had the latest electronics and fashion trends for school. He enjoyed playing tennis and found pleasure in keeping an immaculate lawn. Richard was very active in the community and in his church. An avid sports fan, he coached Little League baseball and played baseball for the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and the American Legion. At Third Baptist Church, he taught the Men's Class in Church School for years until it merged with the Centennial Class which he enjoyed immensely. He was a member of the Andrew's Brothers/Men's Ministry and was past president of the Male Chorus. Brother Hoskie also participated fully in the many activities of the church. He was a dedicated husband and caregiver for his wife until his sudden passing. Richard will be greatly missed by many. Preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Anne Cooke, he leaves to cherish his memory his dear wife, Joyce Jones Hoskie; his son, James Richard Hoskie III (Iris) of Chesapeake; his daughter Michelle Hoskie of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren Alexia Moore, Jaman Hoskie, and India Hoskie; one great - great grandchild, Aaleigh Martin, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
