September 21, 1935 - January 28, 2022
On Friday morning, January 28, 2022, God with His eminent wisdom called His daughter, Mrs. Golethia Burton Smith, home to be with Him in Heaven. She was born on September 21, 1935, in Currituck, North Carolina to the late Edward Marvin Burton and Cora Lindsey Burton. She was the last survivor of her seven siblings. She was married to the late Roy Thomas Smith, Sr. in Norfolk, VA on February 15, 1953. From this union, God blessed them with five children, Cora, Valerie, Cheryl, Roy Jr. and Wanda. She instilled in her children and grandchildren to always put your trust and faith in God no matter what you are experiencing in life. Golethia, affectionally known as “Peaches”, was a faithful and dedicated member of First Baptist Church South Portsmouth for over 30 years. She served as a Trustee, as the Usher Board #2 Ministry Leader and a Missionary. She enjoyed attending Sunday Services, Sunday School Class and Adult Bible School. She had a special love for her Pastor and Church family. She was very instrumental in the design and decorating of the Warren E. Amlet Fellowship Hall at the church. She was employed for 30 years as a Buyer for the children’s and ladies departments at Altschul’s Clothing Store in Norfolk, VA until her retirement. She was a former member of the Greater Deep Creek Elks Lodge #1033 in Chesapeake, VA, where she served for several years as the Daughter Ruler. Golethia was a woman who liked things done in decency and in order. She was a lady of sheer elegance with her very stylish clothes and shoes. Fashion etiquette was a must for her. She loved to shop, travel, watch WWF/WWE wrestling and talk on the telephone. Her favorite term of endearment was calling you “Baby Doll or Sugar”. She was proceeded in death by her parents, her husband, Roy T. Smith Sr., daughter, Valerie Bynum, grandson, Derrick Wilson and all of her siblings. She leaves to cherish her memories: daughters, Cora Freeman (Ray), Cheryl Smith, Wanda Smith, and one son Roy T. Smith Jr; Six grandchildren, Anthony Wilson (Monique), Myron Smith (Patricia), Roxy Powell, Shanica Smith, Ranese Carroll (Sidney) and Thea Smith. Five great grandchildren, Kailan Wilson, Kyra Wilson, Samaria Jones, and Gabrielle Freeman Jones, Raegan Carroll and one great-great grandson, Jekhani Vaughan and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and two very special friends, Mrs. MaeDella Perry and Mr. Reggie Allen.
