Edna Hurdle Knight

God is gracious and He is kind. He breathes into us the breath of life, allows us to dwell among men for a measured time, then dispatches His angels in His own time. Quietly, in the stillness of the hour when Edna's time would cease, He peacefully reclaimed His own and gave her a blessed release. Edna Saloma Hurdle Knight, a creation of God, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, October 22,2015 in the comfort of her home. Her transition was quiet with the presence of angels to guide her safely on her journey through ethereal skies. The fourth of sixteen children born to Willie Glenn and Eliza Taylor Hurdle, the Christian faith was the core of her existence. She was deeply rooted in God's Word and never hesitated to tell those she encountered of His unending goodness, mercy and love. Edna received and ended phone conversations with "God loves you!" Her religious experience began at Union Baptist Church in Virginia. Upon migrating to New Jersey, she joined in fellowship at Pilgrim Baptist Church. She loved her church. Edna worked diligently in the church in various capacities. In her time, she was a Sunday school teacher, head of the hospitality committee, president of the missionaries, and president of the scholarship committee. Edna was a servant and child of God until her transition. She is now busy working on her assignment in Glory. Edna's educational training began in Nansemond County Schools and Portsmouth Public Schools. She received the Bachelor of Arts Degree from Elizabeth City State University in North Caro- lina, attended New York University, and earned a Certification in Special Education from Kean College. Her career enhancing the lives of countless children began in Virginia and continued for more than 40 years in New Jersey where she taught at Alyea Street School in Newark and Passaic Public Schools. Siblings who predeceased her were Esper Hurdle Sr., Joyce Davis, Catherine Nixon, Wilhelmina Hardy, Evelyn Riddick, Shirley Lassiter, and Russell Hurdle Sr.; nieces Levani Mason and Teresa Riddick; nephews Bryce Nixon, Tyrone Riddick, Shelton Hurdle, Russell Hurdle Jr., Keith Cassell Sr. and Keith Cassell Jr., great niece Larrycia McDaniel and great-nephew Christian Nixon. Those left to rejoice in God's goodness are sons Romeo ,L. Knight and Dennis E. Knight; grandchildren Romero "Justin" and Chad; great-grandchildren: Romero Jr., Genairo, Teionna and Carmelo; siblings Eliza Priscilla Mason, Ernestine Cassell, William Glenn Hurdle, Ella Dabney-Bynum, Harriett Hurdle, Curtis Hurdle, Vernon Hurdle and Carolyn Cannon; sister-in-law, Velma Hurdle; and brother-in-law, Steve Lassiter - all from Virginia. Also, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and dear confidantes Marian Harper Smith, Mary Parker, Joan Lowther, Hannah Hurdle Toomey, Frances Williams and Deacon Morris Green.
