Doretha S. Boyd

Doretha Snowden Boyd, 75, transitioned home to rest surrounded by family on the afternoon of May 30,2020 at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. Doretha was born October 8, 1944 in Elizabeth City, N.C. to the late Kelly Snowden and Ellar Whidbee Snowden. She was preceded in death by her sister, Barbara Ann Snowden. Dodie, as she was so affectionately called, was educated in the Elizabeth City public school system. She was a proud graduate of P.W. Moore High School's Class of 1962. She was a devoted member of the Kingdom Hall for many years, where her spirituality was steadfast. Professionally, banking was her passion; she retired from Sun Trust Bank in 1999. The story of her courtship and marriage is one of a kind. On a brisk fall day in 1966, she was reunited with an old classmate-Ernest Boyd, Sr., whom she sat across from in the first grade in 1950. They wed in 1967. For the next 53 years they were inseparable and deeply in love. From this union, two beautiful children were born: Uvonka Boyd-Sutton (Joseph, Sr.) and Ernest Boyd, Jr. (Dana) both of Chesapeake. This union also blessed her with 10 grandchildren, induding one very special first-born granddaughter who spent her formative years in her home, Dr. Wintre Johnson (Terah) of Philadelphia, Zaire Nelson, Vivica Boyd, Niveah Boyd, Domonique Palmer, DeAndrea Johnson, Corenzo King, Travis Sutton, Tracy Sutton and Joseph Sutton, Jr. (Chelsea). She was also blessed to become a great- grandmother to 9 great-grandchildren Valen, Ila, Zoleigh, Zuri, Saniya, K'Lani, Da'[on, Elijah, and Ezekiel. She is survived by 2 sisters, Evyine Staten and Hope Alston both of Lawrenceville, GA and one brother, Nyoke Snowden (Claudia) of Chesapeake as well as a dear cousin, Ocia Whitmore (Alphonza) of Chesapeake and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
