William Edward Jones Jr.

Portsmouth – William E. Jones, Jr. peacefully entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, August 16, 2012 at home surrounded by his family. He was born March 13, 1928 to the late William E. Jones, Sr. and Mable Virginia Gee. He was educated at the Sussex County Training School and later continued his studies at Tidewater Community College. At the age of 17, he joined the United States Navy and served his country faithfully for 30 years. After retirement, he was employed by the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth as a police officer where he remained until retirement. He was a faithful and active member of New Bethel Baptist Church, Portsmouth, Virginia. While serviing in ministry there, he sang in the choir and served on the Men’s Usher Board for several years. He later joined St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church until his health began to decline. He was in the Tribe of Levi. He was a man of great faith who loved serving God and attended church regularly. In addition, he sang in the Opera Guild, served as Chaplin of the Disabled American Veterans, and volunteered for Meals on Wheels. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Mable Jones, his sisters Lorraine Parker, Alease Hester, and Annie Stith. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Mrs. Fannie F. Jones; two sons, William E. Jones, III of Portsmouth and Dr. Clovis D. Jones of Sacramento, CA; three daughters, Minister Julia J. Webb (Alexander “Eli”) of Chesapeake, Renata L. Jones of Portsmouth, and Dr. Sonya T. Lanier of Ashburn; one brother, Winston S. Jones (Ann) of Waverly; five grandchildren, Jonathan Saunders, Antonio Saunders, Brittany Webb, Alexander Webb, II, and Kristina Jones; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held from 4pm until 7pm on Monday, August 20th at J. T. Fisher Funeral Services, 1248 N. George Washington Hwy., Chesapeake. A life celebration service will be held on Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, Portsmouth at 11:00 A.M. with Bishop Curtis E. Edmonds officiating and Minister Julia J.
