Vallery D. Theus

Vallery DeBerry Theus, peacefully slept away to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 9, 2025. She was affectionately called “Val” by friends and family. Vallery was a Woodrow Wilson High School graduate (Portsmouth, VA) the Class of 1981. She was on the basketball team for a season as #35. Vallery was great at sports, especially, softball. She played 1st base on the Combinations Baseball Team. She attended Kee’s Business School. Afterwards, Vallery began working for Portsmouth Public Schools 33 years ago. She started out in Human Resources and then moved into a new role as Office Manager at Hodges Manor for the last 20 years. Vallery also, worked at Walmart (Portsmouth) for ten years of service where she retired April 2024. Vallery was an active parent to her children and others. She held several offices of the PTA Board at Douglass Park Elementary, Waters Middle School, and Hodges Manor. As well as coaching the Charles Peet Tee Ball team. Vallery accepted Christ into her heart at an early age and was part of the New Mt. Sinai R.Z.U.A. family where she was groomed and taught the Word of God. She later attended and joined Judah Sanctuary. Vallery was an active member which she served on several boards such as Evangelist, Pastor Aid, and Hospitality. Vallery was preceded in death by her father, Alonzo DeBerry and brothers, Alonzo DeBerry III and Julius DeBerry. Left to honor Vallery’s memory, her mother Edna DeBerry, her loving husband of 40 years Ralph Theus, her 4 boys, Mario C. Theus (April), Lamonte R. Theus (Brittney), Darius R. Theus (LaDonna), Joshua W. Theus (Brittany), 11 grandchildren, Mahri Theus, Markiel Theus, Maleyah Theus, Mekhi Theus, Laila Theus, Maceo Theus, Justus Theus, Emory Theus, Miko Theus, SaNiya Hall, Josiah Hall, her loving and devoted sisters, Vivian Powell of Anchorage, AK; Sheila DeBerry, Verlene Drake (Harvey), Veronica DeBerry of Portsmouth, VA; Denise Watts of Suffolk, VA; Sandra Foster (Kevin) of Springfield, VA; brothers, James DeBerry of Chesapeake, VA; Andrei DeBerry (Cynthia) of Myrtle Beach, SC; Lester DeBerry (Jackie) of Chesapeake, VA; two god daughters: Desirae Christie & Deisha Sumler, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and extended family. Vallery’s life was a true testament of love, kindness, and unwavering devotion to family. She was a bright light of sunshine rays with an infectious smile. Her warm spirit and generous heart touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her. Known as a pillar to the VCU community, she was ecstatic to travel down the highways to support her sons or grandchildren for basketball games, softball games, dance, and cheer practice.
