Thomasena Ward

Ms. Thomasena Garnette Ward was born on December 5, 1955, in Hampton, VA. She was the oldest of four daughters. She departed this life on February 22, 2023, in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She was born to the late Deacon Thomas and Pastor Dorothy Smith. She attended Hampton Public City Schools and graduated from Hampton High School in 1973. After graduating, she attended Thomas Nelson Community College. In 1974, she enlisted in the United States Army and served for four years. After being honorably discharged, she worked for the United States Postal Service for seven years. She then furthered her career with the government, working at the Defense Logistics Agency and retired after thirty years. Thomasena accepted Christ at an early age and was a true worshiper. She started each morning with a cup of coffee, listening to her favorite gospel songs, and meditating by the lake in her backyard. She also loved talking to others about Jesus and sharing her powerful testimony. She was a member of Dominion Church of God in Christ, under the leadership of Bishop Clarence Sellers, Jr. Along with being a Woman of Faith, she loved to laugh, have fun, and tell a good joke. Her favorite pastimes were fishing and working in her garden. She loved sports and was a devoted fan of the Washington Commanders. She was told at an early age that due to a chronic health condition; she would never have children. Her proudest moment was becoming a mother of two daughters from a previous marriage. She loved her family and would boast of how she was blessed. Thomasena was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Dorothy Smith, and nephew, Antonio Taylor. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters, Nickie Hinton (Bertram, Jr.), Gwendolyn Black (Toney, Sr.); Four grandchildren, Kiona Jarvis, De’Aviona Black, Toney Black, Jr, and Harrison Black; One Great-Grandchild, Sky Porter; Three Sisters, Cassandra Scott, Gwendolyn Taylor, and Brenda Smith; One Bonus Sister, Lindy Lowe; Two nieces, Chatia Scott and Keisha Scott, One nephew, Alex Taylor; Two great nieces; One great nephew; One Aunt, Marie Glover and a host of relatives and special friends.
