Thelma Reid

"Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. Psalm 30:5 On August 7, 2014 Thelma's life journey ended while at home with her family. Her heavenly father saw that she fought a good fight but it was time to take her home. Thelma was the first child born to the late John and Almeta Avents on March 10, 1936, in Skippers, Virginia. Thelma, nicknamed by her family "Sug", was educated both in the Virginia and New York schools system. After high school, she met and married her first love Theodore Reid, who preceded her in death. Their union produced three loving children: Valarie, Ronald, and Sherry. Theodore and Thelma migrated to Brooklyn, New York in 1961 with their children. Thelma worked at Kings County Hospital, where she later retired after 29 years of service as an administrative assistant. During her retirement, she volunteered at the Mother Gaston Senior Center. She was an active member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. Thelma became a member of the Brownsville Recreation Center (BRC). At the BRC she was an aerobics instructor and was also one of the founding members of the Golden -Nuggets, which -organized-many exciting-and-entertaining- trips and events. Thelma was recognized for her unrelenting efforts in the various senior programs, receiving Community Leader Awards in 2006, 2007, 2010 and this year, for her phenomenal display of ability and dedication to the seniors and the community. Thelma also had an appearance on the Judge Milian television show. Thelma also loved to travel. She has traveled throughout the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, and West Indies. Her second love was her family and she enjoyed cooking meals for them and close family friends. Cherishing her memory are her three children Valarie Smith (Shayne), Ronald Reid, and Sherry Reid, her sisters Barbra Jones, Dianne Gatling and Valnetta Rowe (Kevin). Her brothers Pastor Bobby Daniels (Cassandra), and Rev. Dr. Craig Avents (Karen), her aunts Olliva Mullen and Vida A vents, her grandchildren Danielle Metcalf, Krysta Shinn, and Candice Long, her great-grandchildren Tamiar Metcalf and Ajee-Symone Mapp and a host of nieces and nephews, and friends. In loving memory are her sisters Emma Terry, Michelle Collins, and Kim Mclean, her Brothers Joseph (Jo Boy) Daniels and Johnnie Ray Avents.
