Steven Edward Klemstine

Steven Edward Klemstine, 78, passed away peacefully at home on September 1, 2026, surrounded by his beloved wife, children, and brothers—just one day after celebrating his birthday on August 31. A devoted servant to his country and community, Steve was a proud U.S. Army veteran who served in Vietnam. He went on to dedicate 39 years to protecting the citizens of Norfolk with Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service from 1971 to 2010, retiring as a driver and fire boat captain at Station #13. Steve was the cherished son of the late Robert J. and Patsy Owens Klemstine and a dear brother to his twin, Stanley E. Evanstine (Marc), his brother Robert O. Klemstine (Keith), and his late sister, Kathryn K. Holzer. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends. Steve married his first and only love, Bonnie House Klemstine, with whom he shared 58 beautiful years of marriage. Together, they raised two children: their son, Steven James Klemstine, and their daughter, Katherine Kristin Scheaffer. He treasured his role as grandfather to John William Armbruster, V, whom he now joins in heaven. A 1967 graduate of Maury High School, Steve was also a skilled general contractor. He was an active and devoted member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church, where he served in many capacities, including as Chair of the Property Committee and as a member of the church council. He worked tirelessly to improve and care for the church property. Steve participated in a Vietnam Veterans Support Group at the Veteran’s Center, where the camaraderie meant a great deal to him. He enjoyed all watersports, including scuba diving, and had a lifelong love of travel. Throughout the years, he played softball with the Norfolk Firefighters team and was inducted into the Tidewater, VA ASA Hall of Fame. He also played in various leagues, including the Church League and the American Legion Senior League with his father and brother, and he especially enjoyed playing co-ed softball with his daughter. Service Information: A celebration of Steve’s life will be held at Our Saviour Lutheran Church, 4200 Shore Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23455, on September 13, 2026, at 3:00 PM. A reception will follow the service, and the family welcomes guests to bring a dish to share. In honor of Steve’s love for travel, the outdoors, and the ocean, guests are invited to wear Hawaiian or island-style attire and share in the Spirit of Aloha as we celebrate his life. Whether serving his country, protecting his community, caring for his church, traveling the world, or spending time with family, Steve lived a life marked by love, purpose, and quiet strength.
