Sarah Joe

On Sunday, June 10, 2012, Mother Sarah Joe earned her wings and went home to be with the Lord. She was born December 7, 1931 to the late James Edward and Mary Bond in Windsor, NC. Mother Joe grew up and attended schools in Windsor, NC and moved to Norfolk, Virginia in 1965. She retired from the Veterans Administration Hospital in Hampton, VA where she worked for over 30 years. She also worked for Corporate Express as a Courier. Mother Joe was one of the founding members of New Discipleship Worship Cathedral where she faithfully served as a servant for God. She became Church Mother under the leadership of the late Bishop Anthony E. Moses and Dennice Moses. She also served on the Hospitality Ministry, the Second Choir, and the Senior Ushers Board. Mother Joe catered many church functions and was well known for her chicken and turkey salad and her beautiful cakes. She was also known for her decorating. Mother Joe could make a head table look like a king was going to grace us with his presence. She always operated with the “Spirit of Excellence.” She was always helping others, even while suffering with her illness. She even continued in the Food Bank ministry until her health prevented her doing so. You could come in the church on any Sunday morning and would hear Mother Joe singing this song, “Through it all, Through it all, I’ve learned to trust in Jesus, I’ve learned to trust in God, Through it all, Through it all, I’ve learned to depend on His Word.” Mother Joe had so much love in her that she acquired many “adopted” children along her life’s journey. She will be greatly missed by her family and her church family. She was predeceased by her brother, Archie Bond; her son, George A. Rascoe Jr. ; her husband’s George A. Rascoe Sr., Russell Williams and William Joe Jr. She leaves to cherish her memory: one daughter, Katie Bond of Norfolk; two stepsons William O. Joe of Virginia Beach, and Marvin Clark (Freda) of Windsor, NC; one stepdaughter, Vicky Smith of Richmond; one daughter in law, Vernell Rascoe of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren Yvonne Mobley of Tampa, FL, Michelle McFadden (Julius) of Norfolk, Wendy Hawks (Petey) of Virginia Beach, Carlos Rascoe (Kelsa) of Atlanta, GA and Natasha Rainey (Twyman) of Virginia Beach; ten great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren , two special friends Will and Pat Latham, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
