Philmore Artis

Deacon Philmore Artis was born to the late Elliott Artis and Mary Lawrence Artis on September 9,1931 in Nansemond County. On December 18. 2023, our sovereign Lord called his good and faithful servant to home to glory from Bon Secor Mary view Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia. He was the last surviving sibling of 13 children. He attended East Suffolk Public School System in Suffolk, Virginia. In 1953 Philmore entered the United States Army and in 1956 exited with an Honorable discharge. On September 5, 1954, he married Treasie Holland Artis in union, were six children in that union. He retired after 40 years Norfolk Naval Air Station and on the weekend, he worked 25 years for H. M. White Bus service driving tourist bus. In 1988 Philmore dedicated his life to the Lord and joined Ebenezer Baptist Church, Portsmouth Virginia. Where he served as a Deacon and many other capacities at the church. After the passing of his first wife Treasie Artis. He met Betty Holmes and married her in 1987 which ended in divorce in 1993. Deacon Philmore Artis will be missed by his three children Laura Carter (Michael), Daryl Philmore Artis (Caritha), and Donald Artis (Virginia). Grandchildren Djuan Artis, Lanesha Allen (Tyrone), Kevin Minter, Joseph Minter, Erika Mabrey, Treasie Artis, Trevon Artis. Step Grandchildren Brandi Hines, Tameka Weathers, Corpus Christ, TX, Edward Blackshear (Briana) Liverpool, NY Crystal Blackshear, One sister-in-Law Jean Artis. Twenty-six great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. And host of nieces and nephews who Philmore genuinely loved. Philmore loved the Our Lord and Savior, and always shared his faith with anyone he would meet. There was never a question of his faith or the love of Jesus Christ. Philmore spoke boldly about his Lord and Savior at any given time or opportunity. Leading people to Christ letting them know the love of God. He is preceded in death by his wife Treasie and 3 children Yvonne Artis Giles, David Eugene Artis and Priscilla Ann Artis Minter, 12 siblings Priscilla Mitchell, Melvina Faulcon, Leon Artis, Elizabeth Hyman, Josephine Barnes, Alfonza Artis Sr, James Artis, Mary Washington, Zebedee Artis, Margaret Doughty, Corinthian Artis, Mattie Lee Robinson. Two grandchildren Darris Lee Artis and Melaniece Ozeh.
