Myra A. Cotton

Myra Anastacia Plaskett-Cotton, transitioned into eternal rest on January 20, 2023. Myra was born December 9, 1949 to the late John Alexander Plaskett and Audrey Dolores Sheen-Plaskett in Christiansted, St. Croix U.S. Virgin Islands. Myra was predeceased by her husband Melvin Cotton Sr., father John Alexander Plaskett, brother John Anthony Plaskett and sister Maria Indiana Plaskett who passed away shortly after birth on July 9,1956. Myra graduated from Portsmouth Catholic High in 1967. She attended Old Dominion University pursuing a degree in Book Keeping/Accounting. Myra’s first job was in the Book Keeping/Accounting department at the Ledger Star. She left the Ledger Star and Old Dominion University to welcome her first child. Thereafter, she was a housewife spending her days tending to the daily needs of her family. Myra and Melvin Sr. were married for over 40 years until his unexpected passing on March 28, 2013. Myra truly enjoyed her motherly duties of providing unconditional love and support to her children. She always cheered them on in all of their recreation and extra-curricular activities, however; she most enjoyed being a band parent. As a band parent with the I.C. Norcom High School Versatile 100 Marching Greyhounds, she developed some life-long relationships and treated all of the children in the band as her own. Later on in life Myra served in various areas of food service to stay busy. As a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 190, Myra served as a chair person for various committees during her 18 year membership. She also enjoyed her time spent with the Oakmont North Seniors. For many years Myra was a member of The Basilica of Saint Mary of Immaculate Conception. When her son was called to serve as the Senior Pastor of the New Genesis Baptist Church Virginia Beach, she created a new partnership there. During COVID-19 protocol she stayed connected virtually on Facebook Live earning the status of a Facebook Anniversary Member until her last service on January 15, 2023. Myra was a kind and loving person. She was a person of few words who spoke through actions of love. She will truly be missed. Myra leaves love and cherished memories with her daughters Shawn Marie Cotton, Ebony Michelle Cotton, and only son Dr. Melvin Cotton Jr. (Lakeesha) Myra was a loving grandmother to Tymetria, Tyrone, Shanice, Quanté, Alexis, Yazmine, Melvin III, Keyana, Amani, Tyree and Caleb. She will also be missed by her siblings Dr. Rochelle Jackson (John), Alena Plaskett, Gregory Plaskett (Lorrie), 94 year old matriarch of the family Audrey D. Sheen-Plaskett, two nieces, five nephews and the entire family.
