Mildred Peterson

Mildred B. Peterson, the daughter, of Rosa Boone and Edward Polk, was born on April l, 1921 in Newsome, Virginia. She was one of 10 children. She was raised by her mother and Edward Giles. Mildred was educated in the Nansemond County Public Schools. Through her school friend, Romine Peterson, she met Walker F. Peterson. She married Walker on February 6, 1938 in Newsome, Virginia. Mildred, Walker and their first son, Theodore, moved to Portsmouth, Virginia. Through the years, James, Yvonne, Wilma, Elvis and William were added to the family. Mildred graduated from the Practical Nursing Program at I.C. Norcom High School. She was employed at Maryview Hospital. She later decided to be a full-time stay at home mother. Mildred confessed Christ at the age of ten and was baptized at Mt.Tabor Baptist Church in Newsome, Virginia. After relocating to Portsmouth, she united with St.Thomas Baptist Church. She was a member of the choir, the Sunday School,the Missionary Society,the Nurse's Guild and Pastor's Aide. Mildred was an energetic member of the PTA, Band Boosters, Room Mothers and many Fun Raising groups in the Portsmouth and Chesapeake Public Schools. Mildred and her family were one of the first families to move to the new development known as Cavalier Manor. She united with the newly located New Bethel Baptist Church on Greenwood Drive, Portsmouth, VA. Mildred was a member of the Nurse's Guild and the Deaconess. She attended and served faithfully until she experienced a decline in health. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward Polk, Rosa Boone and Edward Jiles, her husband, Walker Peterson, her Mother and Father-in-law, Rosa and James Peterson, all of her siblings, Lloyd Boone, William Boone, Lucille Flythe, Lonnie Boone, George Boone, Anna Boone, Edna Davis, Clarence Boone and Jennie Wilson; two sons, Theodore Peterson and Elvis Peterson; a daughter in law, Carolyn Peterson, a grandson, Darrius Ridley, a great grandson, Linus Bremby, Jr. and all of her brothers and sisters in law. Remaining to cherish the legacy and her memories are: James (Evelyn) Peterson, William (Christine) Peterson, Yvonne Bremby, Dr. Wilma Frisco, Brenda Peterson, 12 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, a host of cousins: nieces, nephews and many friends.
