Melvin Howard Hainsworth, Sr.

Melvin Howard Hainsworth, Sr. was born on April 25, 1957, in Norfolk County, Virginia, to Minnie and Lorenzo Hainsworth. After an extended illness, he peacefully transitioned from this life on Friday, March 10, 2023, at Atrium Carolinas Medical Center, surrounded by his beloved wife, Lisa; his son, Carlton; his daughters, Alexandria, and Breanna; his nephews, Julian and Jermain; and his niece, Jennifer. Melvin accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior at a very early age and developed a deep love for the Word of God. Melvin’s spiritual gifts were kindness and acts of charity to those known and unknown to him. Melvin received his early education in the Portsmouth City Schools and he earned his diploma from Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth. After high school, Melvin joined the United States Marine Corps and he retired from the Federal Government with a combination of 30 years of civil (Navy Exchange, USPS), and military service. Melvin loved his wife and partner of 30 years and ensured that he provided a home full of love, protection, and security for Lisa and their family. His mother-in-law, Sue has fond memories of him and affectionately calls him her “son-in-love”. A true brother-sister bond was formed between him and Coni, his “sister-in-love”. Melvin was an avid Steeler fan. Some of his favorite pastimes were video gaming with his sons, teaching his daughters how to be “handy-women” around the home, engaging them in life-lesson conversations, and his daily phone calls with his nephew, Roy. During his later years, Melvin’s youngest son and grandchildren captured his heart, and he devoted the rest of his life to loving and caring for them. Melvin had an amazing relationship with his nieces and nephews and talked so often of how proud of them he was. Melvin was preceded in death by his mother Minnie, his father Lorenzo, his brothers James, Andrew, and Lorenzo Michael, and his sisters Barbara and Carolyn. Melvin leaves to cherish his memory: His loving and devoted wife, Lisa; 5 children, Melvin, Jr. (Teakeisha) of Norfolk, VA; Carlton (Tonya) of Portsmouth, VA; Alexandria, Breanna, and Lavar of Charlotte, NC; 7 grandchildren, Asia, Alana, Eric, Shaquasia, Shadeajah, Infinity, and Kaniyah; the mother and grandmother of his 2 oldest sons, Sharon and Hattie; and a host of other relatives and close acquaintances.
