Mary Elizabeth Horton

“HEAVEN SENT” - Mary Elizabeth Horton was born in Norfolk, Virginia on December 3, 1964, the daughter of Gloria Jean Jordan and Robert Smith. Mary transitioned from her earthly life to her eternal home on Thursday, March 2, 2023. Mary was a faithful member of Greater Mount Zion Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Superintendent Dr. Charles A. Hicks. Mary was raised in Chesapeake VA by her mother and her bonus “Daddy”, Nathaniel Jackson Jr. She attended Chesapeake Public Schools. Mary married the love of her life, Troy Horton, on June 14, 1991, and to this union was born three children, Kent, Trevor and Erica. Mary was one of the first employees of The Faith Foundation LLC, a group home for developmentally disabled adults owned and operated by her brother, Nathaniel Jackson III. After retirement, Mary remained a dedicated volunteer for The Faith Foundation for more than 10 years, up until the day of her passing. She developed a personal relationship with all the staff and clients. It was always a bright day when Ms. Mary showed up. She had a big heart and a beautiful smile. Mary never met a stranger and would strike up a conversation with anyone she met. Her laugh was contagious, and she loved to talk. Mary never saw color; she only saw love and the good in everybody. Mary loved all children and when stationed in Iceland, she operated her own day care. In addition of her mother, Mary was predeceased by her only son, Kent Jermaine Jackson, aunt Mary Pearl DeLoatch, her grandmother, Mary Smith and a special cousin, Kevin Skinner “Man”. Mary leaves to cherish her sweet memories, her devoted husband, Troy Horton, two daughters, Trevor Elizabeth Horton and Erica Nicole Horton; her grandson; Jelani; her “Daddy”, Rev. Nathaniel Jackson jr. (Shirley); two sisters, Amanda Jackson and Gloria Coley; two brothers, Nathaniel Jackson III “Nate”, and Jonathan L. Jackson; her aunt, Dora Williams, special family: Dorothy Conwell “Aunt Honey”, Antwoine Skinner “Peanut”, Valencia Smith ”Nett”, Aaron Smith “Boo Boo”, Nekesha Smith “(Kesha”, Goddaughter, Terrie’ Smith “TeeTee”; her GMZ church family, and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
