Malethia N. Askew

On September 29, 2024, Malethia N. Askew passed away peacefully at Sentara Norfolk General Hosptial. She lived a full, beautiful life spanning 92 years. She was the daughter of the late Rex and Ellen Whitehead, and was born in Plymouth, North Carolina on April 13th, 1932. Malethia lived through times of great change, carrying with her the values, strength, and resilience of an earlier time. She was a woman of enduring principles, deeply committed to love, generosity, and kindness. For those fortunate enough to sit at her table, a meal wasn’t just something she cooked. It was a labor of love. Known for using her special ingredient—good old fashioned lard—she would create delicious, comforting meals, like her legendary blackeyed peas. Such dishes were an expression of her warmth and care, a true taste of home. She was a woman of many talents. Not only was she an exceptional cook, but she also was a gifted seamstress. With her own two hands she could turn any pattern of cloth, into beautiful garments for herself, her family, and others. Each garment reflected her impeccable sense of style. She was always classy and polished, from her shoes to her elegant hairstyles. However, it was Malethia’s kindness that truly defined her. She had a heart so generous she would give the clothes off her back to help someone in need. Not just an occasional act, her compassion was a way of life, extending to all who crossed her path, bringing warmth into every room she entered. Malethia loved to talk about God, and often attended the conventions and assemblies of Jehovah’s Witnesses; occasions that brought her great joy and fulfillment. One of her greatest loves was her family. She cherished every moment spent with them, making sure they always felt her love and care. She took immense pride in the memories they created together. She was preceded in death by her husband William Askew and five children: Cornelius Askew, Doris Jones, Malethia Perry, Donald Askew Sr., and Earnest Tyson. She is survived by two daughters: Catherine Hayes and Gloria Askew; and six grandchildren Veilsa Moore (Eric), Michele Hayes, Tosha Quensenberry (Deric), Steven Jones (Shantay), Donald Askew Jr., and Louis Andrews. She also had seventeen siblings and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
