Laura U. Joyner

Laura U. Joyner-Joyner completed her assigned walk in this life and met our Heavenly Father to live in her eternal home on September 12,2018. Laura was born in Pendleton, North Carolina on October 10, 1927, to the late Thomas and Jesma Joyner. She was one of ten children. She attended Willis Hare High School in North Carolina. She married Clifton Joyner in 1943; and in 1952, the Joyner family relocated to Portsmouth, Virginia. She became a gifted seamstress at an early age. Laura was a meticulous seamstress and retired from Anderson & Little Company after sixteen years of dedicated service. She took pride and precision in the details of her tailoring. She also enjoyed a professional stylish fit. Her family took pride and marveled at the beautiful items she would make, especially the beautiful clothes, curtains, and slip covers. Laura was a long-time member of Third Baptist Church where she attended Sunday School Class # 12 and sang in the Gospel and Sanctuary Choirs. She attended and served faithfully until her illness prevented her from participating. She was an avid gardener and was frequently complimented on the beauty of her gardens. She was awarded "Yard of the Month" by her neighborhood Civic League. She enjoyed challenging all her grands by playing Atari, watching Yankee baseball games, and working crossword puzzles. Laura also loved reciting and writing poetry. Her eloquent use of words won her a third-place award in a poetry competition sponsored by the Literary Guild in the non-professional’s category. Laura was preceded in death by her husband Clifton Joyner, daughter Evelyn Ballard, son Charles Joyner, grandson Jake Council; brothers James, Alfred, Jacob, Dillard and Millard Joyner; and sisters, Theresa Gaye and Gladys Robertson. She leaves to cherish her memory six daughters: Madeline McCleese of New Jersey, Shirlene Joyner and Patricia Joyner both of Chesapeake, Virginia, Carolyn Council (Jesse), Brenda Amos and Julia Allmond all of Portsmouth, Virginia, one sister, Julia Harris (Johnnie) of Newport News, Virginia, one brother, Quient Joyner of Gaston, North Carolina; seven grandchildren: Reginald, Simona, Kevin, Kenneth, Capria, Ashley and Joseph; ten great grandchildren: Brandon, Shaelyn, Kevshe, Kiara, Keyon, Carah, Taevon, Sheldon, Cavan, Caice, one great-great grandson Michael, many nieces, nephews and special friends, Mrs. Katie Crest, Mrs. Delores Sawyer, Mrs. Marion Anderson, and Mrs. Byrdell Branch.
