Joyce Lewis

Joyce M. Lewis was called from labor to reward on July 22, 2016 surrounded by her children and family. Joyce was a beautiful God fearing lady with a smile that could bring joy to anyone or any situation. Joyce was a devoted mother who sacrificed mightily for the care and well-being of her children. She was a great mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend. To know her was to love her and the joy she brought to everyone she touched.Joyce graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and continued her education completing a Certified Nursing Assistant degree. Joyce is known for her long term nursing position with the medical practice of Dr. Angeles in Portsmouth, Virginia where she touched many lives with her sweet spirit and caring nature. She then continued her professional career as a secretary with Portsmouth Public Schools where she served diligently for almost twenty years. Joyce also was a lover of music and dance. She is known from her work at Portsmouth’s Parks and Recreation where she formed the Foxy Ladies, a modern dance group for young ladies and girls, providing them with guidance and support that would last throughout their lives. Joyce loved the Lord with all her heart. She studied the Word of God and prayed fervently. She was a member of Twine Memorial Holy Temple since a child and in recent years found a dual church home at Sr. Mark Missionary Baptist Church. Joyce was a member and former president of Twine’s Inspirational Choir, a member of the female usher board, missionary circle, and past member of the nurses’ guild. She was also the director and organizer of Twine’s first praise dance ministry. A faithful servant she was! Joyce leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Michael Vann, her two loving children, Jac’Quail Jones (Herbert) and JerNard Mayes (Kendra); two beautiful grandchildren Hope MarieJones and Kaiden Nasir Mayes; her mother and father Vernon and Gertie Wallace; one loving sister, Darlene Wallace-Grant (Samuel); three brothers, Michael Wallace, Anthony Wallace, and Andre Wallace (Liltra); two special nieces, Kenisha Wallace and Ketron Grant (Gregory); and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, family and special friends.
