John Bynum Jr.

On June 17, 2013, at 6:10 p.m., God called John Bynum Jr., into eternal rest. John Bynum, Jr. was a champion for Jesus Christ. He was born in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, to the late John and Rosa Bynum. He was predeceased by three brothers, Collie, Frank, and William Bynum, in addition to two sisters, Rosa Cobb and Emma Brown. John Bynum Jr. was employed as a tank tester for the Production Department Structure Group at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard from August 1944 to April 1986. In 1987, he drove transportation buses for the Norfolk Naval Air Station and Norfolk International Airport until he retired in 1991. John loved all sports, and his passion was bowling. He bowled for over forty years with numerous teams all over the Tidewater area where he received awards and trophies until his health started failing him. John was known as "Grey Top", 'Pop," and "Grand daddy." He had a strong love for Jesus Christ, his family and his church family. He joined Third Baptist in 1969 and remained there faithfully giving God the praise until he was unable to attend regularly due to his health. He lived a good, long, and blessed life. He loved his family gatherings because there were always dancing, playing cards, and lots of food, love, and fun. In his prior marriage to the late Mary Bynum, their union was blessed with two children - John Bynum and Eugene Bynum. On July 15, 1983, he met his lifelong companion, Betty Jean Jackson, and they were blessed with seven children, Calvin J. Lewter (Monique); James W Jackson Jr., (Betty); Angelia Sessoms, the late Valerie Adams, the late Donnell A. Jackson (Iris); Dana L. Green (Taurus); and Timothy M. Jackson. He leaves to mourn three sisters Arlene Ebsom, Greenville, N.C.; Dorothy Hinton, Rocky Mount, N. C. and Novella Barrett, Matteson, IL. In addition to his children are 17 grandchildren: Chris Creecy, Valerie Creecy, Chris Mann, Timothy M. Jackson Jr., Nikki Caesar, Kaci Caesar-Turner, Dominique Ferguson, Tiffany Hampton, Lorenzo Ferguson, Nicole Lewter, Jason Jackson, Raven Martin, Nikki Brown, Melvin Adams, Jr., Rico Jackson, and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
