Ida M. Peek

Ida Missouri Peek was the oldest and last remaining of five children born to the late Augustus C. and Matilda R. Walker, on January 8, 1916. She was raised in Pughsville (Nansemond County) and received her early education there. Ida accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and from childhood through her teenage years, she served the Lord in an active role as a member of New Hope Baptist Church, Suffolk, Virginia. Ida gave birth to her first child, Alease, in 1933 and subsequently moved to New York City to make a better life for herself. She resided in Rockaway Beach, New York, but because she dreaded the cold winter months, she returned home to Virginia. In 1935, Ida returned to Rockaway Beach where she remained a resident until 2011. While in New York, she met the love of her life, the late Garnie E. Peek. They were married on December 2, 1941, until his passing in July 1967. To their union was born a daughter, the late Dr. Jacqueline Peek-Davis. Ida was employed in domestic work for many years. In 968, she was employed as an Analyst Clerk with The Equitable Life Insurance Company of America. She retired from The Equitable in December 1980. She spent the next.16 years caring for her granddaughter, Rashida. She was a former member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Arverne, New York for over 60 years, where she served faithfully. They honored her with this testimony, "She is faithful, punctual, efficient, concerned and always ready to help where the need arose." Her involvement in Mount Carmel and the community was never ending. She visited the sick, phoned the shut-in, comforted the bereaved and always had a kind word for those who were seeking direction and answers. She sang in the Senior Choir for over 50 years, was a Sunday School Teacher for over 40 years, and Church Clerk for over 35 years. She was a' true missionary. She resided in New York 76 years. Ida relocated back home to Virginia in 2011, where she received care from her daughter, Alease, with whom she lived until her passing on November 4, 2015. She reestablished her membership with New Hope Baptist Church immediately. When she could no longer attend services, she would say, "I served when I was able to serve." Ida's favorite scripture was Psalms 84:11, "For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly." She would always “Lord remember me”. HE DID! Ida leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Mrs. Alease Jones; four grandchildren, Gordon Taylor (Carolyn), Ronald Taylor, Teresa Delbridge, and Rashida Davis; a son-in-law, Jonathan Davis and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
