Early Life and Family Herbert Lee Josey Sr. was born August 25, 1944, in Suffolk, Virginia. He lived there until the age of 12, when his family relocated to New York. In New York, Herbert met the love of his life, Mary Josey. The couple married May 5, 1962, beginning a union that would last 56 years until Mary's passing in 2018. Their marriage was marked by unwavering devotion, hard work, and the joy of raising a large family. Together, they nurtured nine children and built a home grounded in love and faith. Career and Community Service While living in New York, Herbert worked as a production planner for several defense companies. His dedication and reliability earned him the respect of both colleagues and friends. In 1994, Herbert and Mary returned to Suffolk, where they embarked on a new journey, dedicating themselves to serving children and families. They operated a daycare and opened their home as foster parents for nearly two decades. Through this work, they touched countless lives and exemplified true love and service to their community. Faith and Church Involvement Herbert was an active and faithful member of Grove Baptist Church in Portsmouth, Virginia. He led the men’s ministry and sang with both joy and strength in the church choir. His voice, first nurtured in his youth and developed further as a soul singer in the 1970s, became a lasting gift of praise and encouragement within his church family. Legacy Above all, Herbert will be remembered for his kindness, integrity, and quiet strength. He served as a source of wisdom and guidance to his children and grandchildren. His devotion to his wife, Mary, stands as an enduring example of love and commitment. Herbert’s legacy will continue through the lives he touched, the family he raised, and the community he served.
