Floyd Richard Myrick, Jr.

Floyd Richard Myrick, Jr., beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2024, at the age of 82, after a lengthy illness. Born in Portsmouth, VA on July 2, 1942, Floyd was the oldest child of the late Floyd Richard Myrick and Marion T. Buford. Floyd's life was marked by service and dedication. He grew up in the Prentis Park neighborhood of Portsmouth, VA, and graduated from IC Norcom High School in 1961. After several years at Norfolk State University, he began his career as one of the first Black firefighters in Portsmouth, joining the Portsmouth, VA Fire Department in 1965. Over 31 years of service, Floyd rose to the rank of Captain before retiring with honor. A hard worker, he also drove a taxi and a paint truck for numerous years in addition to his full-time job. Floyd also worked part-time at Dillard’s Department store for several years after retiring from the Fire Department. Floyd accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior at an early age and faithfully served as a Deacon at Ebenezer Baptist Church for many years. He later became a member of Alpha and Omega Baptist Fellowship in 2014, attending services both in person and remotely due to declining health until his passing. He loved Jesus and his Church family. Floyd married his beloved wife, Dianne on July 5, 1986, and together they built a life filled with love and devotion. Floyd was a dedicated father to Morna Carter, and bonus children Damali Vaughan and Kamau Vaughan (Yolanda). An avid supporter of Norfolk State University athletics, Floyd enjoyed cheering on the basketball and football teams. Known for his love of history, Floyd also loved to explore country roads and connecting with family and friends across the country. His humor, penchant for giving nicknames, and genuine love for family and friends endeared him to all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his siblings Melvin Myrick, Pernell Thompkins, and Lamar Thompkins. He is survived by his wife Dianne, children Morna, Damali and Kamau (Yolanda). Plus, siblings Charles Myrick, Gloria Davis (Maurice), sisters-in-law Juanita Myrick and Deborah Thompkins, brother-in-law Harry Dillard (Katie). Floyd's memory will be treasured by his grandchildren Veronica and Shaniqua Myrick, Anthony Orque, Sophia, Caleb and Josefa Vaughan, great-granddaughter Jada and a host of nieces and nephews. Floyd Richard Myrick, Jr. will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering devotion to his family, friends, and community.
