Flossie Mae Hines

A time to be Born… Flossie Smith was born to Deacon Clarence and Deaconess Sadie Winfield Smith in Portsmouth, VA on January 24, 1942. She was the fourth of fourteen children. Her siblings are Merlin, William, Arthur, Ruby, Charles, Odessa, Clarence, Marion, Albert, Florine, Alton, Curtis and Earline Smith. She grew up in a home shaped by love, prayer, Christian values and virtues, singing, sewing and working. A time to Learn…. Flossie was educated in the public schools of Chesapeake Virginia. That education began at Southwestern Elementary school and continued at Crestwood High School and led to her graduation 1961. A time to Love… Anyone who knew Flossie knew that she loved music and singing. She began singing as a child in the junior choir at Twine’s Memorial. Flossie’s passion for singing has been shared in most choirs at Twine’s Memorial. Her innate love and talent for song has encouraged and uplifted souls across many boundaries. Following many music artists and gospel music concerts is where she met her future husband Willie Hines of 18 years. Her melodious alto voice music ministry has transcended time and truly manifested into what can only be described as divine. A time to Work… Flossie always had a great love for children. She began her professional career as a Portsmouth Public School System Instructional Para. She was primarily an instructional assistant, who served the special needs children of Port Norfolk Elementary and Westhaven Elementary Schools for more than 15 years. A time to Serve God… Flossie’s profound love for God inspired her passion to seek after Him and His knowledge. As a member of Twine’s Memorial Temple Church, where she was affectionately called Ms. Flossie, she served as a choir member, Women’s Bible Study participant and great Servant. Flossie never forgot her calling as an educator, and singer and visited Adult Assistant Living continuing the gift. Flossie was an “amazing servant” to her church family and community. “Her helping hand presence has been felt in all of her environments bringing Christian principles to serve “the least of these”! She cared for with an unrivaled fashion.” A time to Meet God… On September 8, 2020, God’s will connected with Flossie’s spirit. After spending precious memorable moments with her son Keith and family, she answered God’s call to come home. A time to Honor and Cherish… Flossie leaves to honor and cherish her memories a loving and devoted son, Keith (Teras); grandchildren: Courtney, Corey (Aja), Keiva and Kayla; great grandchildren: Madison, Aria and Ava; siblings: William (Flora) Smith; Ruby Fields; Marion, Albert, Alton Smith and Curtis (Rita)Smith, Florine (Andrew) Murphy; Sister-in-law: Mary Smith; Brother-in-law: Linward Fields, a host of nephews and nieces: James (Deanna) Smith, Voncia (George) Arterberry, Jamah and Ryan Murphy, Lenora (Glenn) Griffin, Terri MiKell, Lynetta (Anthony) Hines, Katrina Smith, Rosalyn Smith, Andrieka Brown, Tandrieka Tolbert, Amber Mason, Tonya (Darrell) Gray, Andre Smith and Rhonda (Jerry) Coles. A beloved host of cousins, other relatives and dear friends. Flossie was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Sadie Smith; brothers: Merlin, Arthur, Charles and Clarence Smith, Jr.; sisters: Earline and Odessa Smith; niece, Shelia Stewart and nephew Arthur Smith, first husband Weaver King and second husband Willie Hines. Psalm 139:14 – “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works and that my soul knows very well.”
