Eugene Hinton, Sr.

Eugene Hinton, Sr. was born on October 28, 1934 in Brooklyn, NY to parents Royal and Dora Hinton. He was the eighth of nine children. Eugene’s education went as far as high school until he enlisted into the Marine Corps and became a drill sergeant. He was committed and proudly served his country. He traveled all over the world and always had great stories to share about his experience as a marine. In 1955, he met Patricia Ann Isles, also from Brooklyn, New York. They fell deeply in love and made the commitment to each other in marriage that same year. From their loving union, came along 2 children. His beloved son Eugene and beloved daughter Tina. Four years after the birth of Tina, Eugene, Sr. decided to leave the marines to be with his family. Some time later, Eugene began working as a conductor for the Transit Authority in Brooklyn and Queens. He worked for the transit authority for over 30 years. Sadly, a month before he was to retire, Patricia became ill and died in November of 1988, leaving Eugene and the family devastated. Eugene will always be remembered for his loving kindness, his generosity, his laughter, his joyful singing and gentle spirit. His presence exuded a light that drew people to him. No matter what life threw at him he always remained sound in mind and spirit. Soon after he retired, Eugene and the family became very involved with Sacred Heart Church, in Cambria Heights, Queens. He was a Sunday School teacher and a reader of scriptures. He soon met Margaret Stephenson at a party in 1989. They married in June 1993 on board the Spirit of Norfolk, Norfolk, Virginia and lived happily there together for 27 years. From the union, Margaret was blessed with 2 bonus children and 4 bonus grandchildren. Eugene and Margaret were both members of Mount Caramel Baptist Church for several years. Eugene joined Mount Carmel Baptist Church in August 1993 and was active in the Trustee Ministry, a cook in the Men’s Fellowship for many years, a graduate of the Discipleship Evangelism Ministry, and also sang in the Male Choir. He loved the Lord with all his heart, mind, soul and strength. Well done thy good and faithful servant! Eugene will always be remembered for his loving kindness, his generosity, his laughter, his joyful singing and gentle spirit. His presence exuded a light that drew people to him. No matter what life threw at him he always remained sound in mind and spirit. The Lord saw fit to rest Eugene’s soul on Saturday, September 26, 2020. Eugene is predeceased by his eight siblings. He leaves behind to mourn: his loving and devoted wife, Margaret Hinton. His children who he loved and nurtured, Eugene Hinton, Jr. Tina Hawkins and his son-in-law Bruce Hawkins, Sr. Grandchildren: Aiyana Hinton, Aja, Bruce and Sarah Hawkins. Great-Grandchildren Tyrone Brooks, Aaliyah Woods, Sariah and Dana Bascombe and the baby, Zoey Castillo. He leaves to cherish his memory and great legacy a continuous stream of in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends too numerous to name. We love you Grandpa, you will be missed Daddy-O’s.
