Derrick Duane Rand Jr.

On August 24, 2008, Derrick Duane Rand, Jr. was called home by his angel to be with the Lord. Derrick was born on March 1, 1989 to Mr. Derrick Rand, Sr. and Ms. Monica Holloman in Richmond, VA. At five years old Derrick went to live with his grandmother, Ms. Malka Smith, in Norfolk, VA and had been there ever since. At 19 years old his heart and affection for love was beyond his years, which astonished many people. He greeted everyone with a sincere smile and a hug. There was no such word as “stranger” to Derrick because he loved talking to everyone. It was not unusual for the officers of Mariners Watch to come to his house to let his grandparents know how well behaved and well mannered he was. “He loves everybody” said Officer Chris and he wished there were more children like him. Derrick was very talented and enjoyed dancing. He was always the life of the party. Everyone adored him. Derrick loved taking trips and hanging out with the older guys. He loved all sports and enjoyed playing all sports. His love for football and basketball was exceptional. Whenever you saw Derrick he had a basketball in his hands, a baseball cap on and a jersey. He enjoyed going to Norfolk State’s basketball and football games. Derrick truly admired the new quarterback Mr. Dennis “Dino” Brown who he had the pleasure of meeting. We think it was actually the cheerleaders he was watching. Derrick was an honor roll student at Granby High School and has never missed a day. He truly admired his teachers as well as his fellow students. Trips to the beach and swimming were also a part of his activities. Derrick was overly protective of his grandmother Malka and aunt Briarsha who was the sunshine of his day. Derrick leaves behind to celebrate his life his father Derrick Rand, Sr.; his mother, Monica Holloman and stepfather, Michael; sisters Tiara and Jewel; a brother Michael Jr. of Richmond; great-grandmothers Elizabeth McBride from Richmond and Ethel Bracey of New York; grandparents Malka and Clarence “Juicy” Smith of Norfolk; aunts Briarsha, Markena Francis, Lolita Robinson and Shaquana Stephens all of New York, and Joy Blathers and Kim Smith of Richmond; uncles Billy Council of New York and Michael John of Richmond; cousins and best friends Mikey, Djyon, Bryce, Diondre, and a host of relatives and friends.
