Darryl Ferguson

On Wednesday, November 26, 2025, Darryl D. Ferguson entered into eternal rest, where he now knows a peace beyond understanding. Known lovingly as “Twirt” to those who held him dear, Darryl was born on July 1, 1986, to Gwendolyn E. Grimes and the late Darryl A. Joe. Darryl was educated in the Portsmouth Public School System and was a proud graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. His spirit was as boundless as his heart. Darryl carried with him not just brilliant creativity, but a warmth that made everyone feel seen, heard, and loved. Wherever Darryl went, joy followed. He was the spark in every gathering, the laughter in every room. And though his presence was always vibrant, he was never too busy to tell those he loved how deeply they mattered. It was rare for him to part ways without offering a heartfelt “I love you,” a simple truth he lived by every day. His mother was his rock, and there was nothing he would not do for her; he adored her, and she cherished her baby boy just as deeply. Darryl faced life’s challenges with unwavering courage and an unbreakable resolve. No hurdle could stop him from reaching for his dreams. His courage and optimism will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, and his legacy of laughter, love, and perseverance will never be forgotten. Darryl was also known throughout the battle-rap community as “Young X,” a name that carried weight, respect, and pride. His sharp wit, commanding presence, and undeniable talent made him a standout artist in a craft he deeply loved. The stage was where his creativity came alive — where he connected with others, inspired peers, and earned admiration far beyond his hometown. A proud son of Portsmouth, Virginia, Darryl carried his city in everything he did. He uplifted it with every performance, every word, and every moment he shared with those who believed in him. The community he poured himself into — and the one that embraced him in return — will forever remember his passion, his voice, and the legacy he leaves behind. Darryl was preceded in death by his father, Darryl A. Joe; his stepfather, Jerome Grimes; and his grandparents, Annie Ferguson, Curtis Ferguson, Bernadette Mizell, and Joseph Mizell. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted mother, Gwendolyn E. Grimes; two loving brothers, Michael Drake (Stacy) and Steven Wright; his uncles, Roderick Ferguson and Steven Edwards (Jackie); and his aunts, Veronica Ferguson, Tracey Berry (Gerald), and Carmen Mizell. He also leaves behind his nieces and nephews, Maquan Jones, Maqwesha Jones, Michael Drake, and Michala Drake; and his great-nieces and great-nephews, Makari Jones, Makahi Jones, Morgan Jones, Kali Drake, and Khilah Drake. In addition, he is fondly remembered by a very dear and special friend, Rezina Lawson. Darryl shared an especially close and unbreakable bond with his cousins, who loved him deeply and stood with him through every season of life. Their connection was one of laughter, loyalty, and genuine friendship — a family tie that shaped his journey and will forever honor his memory. Though it is impossible to name everyone whose lives he touched, his family takes comfort in knowing that countless relatives, friends, and members of the community will continue to hold his memory close to their hearts.
