Colbert Taylor

CHESAPEAKE – Colbert Longworth Taylor of the 1900 block of Shipyard quietly completed his journey on Saturday, January 8, 2011, three months short of his 100th birthday. God welcomed his faithful servant, our father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle home. Colbert was born April 7, 1911, in Chesapeake, VA (formerly Norfolk County). He was preceded in death by his parents, Horace Greely and Esther Ellison Taylor; and brother, Robert Taylor. He was the widower of Mary Alice Griffin. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Virgie Artis Taylor and they had a very loving and nurturing relationship. Colbert loved the Lord. He was a member of the Divine Baptist Church, where he served faithfully as a devoted deacon for years. When he was no longer able to serve, he was bestowed the distinction of Deacon Emeritus. One of his community affiliations was with the Silver Strands Senior Citizen Club, Chesapeake, VA. He was employed by the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1970. He never had idle hands, as he worked for years as a farmer, which was his true passion. He is survived by his daughter, Mildred White and son-in-law Bishop Clifton N. White; four grandchildren, Clifton N. White III and wife Silvia, Deborah White, Anita White-Woodley and husband Curtis, and Cindy Gamble and husband Bruce; seven great-grandchildren, Maurice, Justin, Rafael, Ramon, Kristen, Erika, and Jerome; two beloved, devoted sisters Alice Boyd and Eva Rountree and husband Jacob; and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, and extended families and friends. He will be deeply missed. The family wishes to thank the caregivers and friends at Alzwell Nursing Home, Sentara Assisted Living Center, and the staff of MediHome Health & Hospice for making Colbert’s journey home a peaceful and smooth transition. The family will receive friends and viewing will be held from 7:00 to 8:30pm on Wednesday, January 12th, at J. T. Fisher Funeral Services, 1080 N. George Washington Hwy, Chesapeake, VA. Viewing will also be noon on Thursday, January 13th at Divine Baptist Church, 2917 Old Galberry Road, Chesapeake, VA 23323 prior to the life celebration service which will be conducted at 1:00pm. The family will assemble at the funeral home for the procession by noon. The interment will follow at Roosevelt Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake.
