Clifton Thompson, Sr.

Clifton “Cliff” Thompson departed this earth peacefully on October 4, 2022, at 5:38 pm. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. Mr. Thompson was born in Richland, North Carolina to Polly Kelly. He had one sister, whom he was extremely fond of Ms. Mary Askew. Mr. Thompson leave behind to cherish his memory seven children. Yvonne Johnson, Clifton “Burt” (Loretta) Thompson, Courtland “Cocomo” (Janet) Thompson, Gwendolyn “Gwen” (William) Suggs, Paul Thompson, Sr., Victor “Angelo” Thompson, and Jacqueline “Jackie” Elliott. He had four stepchildren also that lovingly called him Dad. Eddie Jackson, Renea (Randy) Mcfadden. He was predeceased by his wife Gloria Thompson (May 2011), a stepson Gary Jackson (January 2019), stepdaughter Samantha Jackson (October 2018). His first wife and the mother of his children Ms. Annie Bell Thompson (December 20212) and his second wife Ms. Marion Thompson (dec. unknown). Mr. Thompson joined the Army when he was only 16 years of age on October 21, 1942. He convinced the recruiter he was 19 at the time. He served during World War II. He received an honorable discharge on October 1, 1944. During his service he received several awards. The American Theater Service Medal, EAME Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal and a World War II Victory Medal. Mr. Thompson was a wounded veteran that served our country valiantly. Mr. Thompson held several jobs around the country, but most notable was his years as a civil service employee. He also served as a security guard until he eventually retired. He resided in Seattle, WA until his retirement until he and his wife Gloria returned to Portsmouth, VA, where he spent his remaining days enjoying his kids and grandkids. Mr. Thompson had a true love for working on and refurbishing cars. There wasn’t a car made that he did not know how to fix. It was his passion. He also got great joy out of hanging with his four sons, Burt, Courtland, Paul and Angelo. And he was a real girl dad. He also leaves to cherish the many memories, 15 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and his special care giver Lisa Woodhouse. The family will be receiving guests and visits at the home of Courtland Thompson 3921 Old Virginia Road Chesapeake, VA 23323. No visitors on Friday October 7.
