Bertie M. Smalls

Mother Bertie Smalls was born to Queen Esther Shackelford and Oliver Weston on October 12, 1937 in Andrews, South Carolina. She graduated from Rose Mary High School. She relocated to New York at the age of 19, where she met her loving husband Elder John Smalls. She mistook her husband for his twin brother, but she quickly realized she was talking to the love of her life. After courting for a year, they were married in a private ceremony on June 19, 1959. She gave her life to Christ in 1960 and faithfully served Him until He called her home. Shortly after they were married, they moved to San Francisco and lived there for five years. While in California, they met life-long friends. Elder John and Mother Bertie moved back to New York where they lived until relocating to Chesapeake, V A in 1990. They were married for 53 years and from this union were born three children, Rondrea, John Jr. (John-John) and Toya . Mother Smalls was a case worker with the Department of Social Services for over 18 years; in additional to being a loving and devoted wife and mom, she also attended Nassau Community College in New York. She enjoyed cooking, baking and being of service to people. She took great pleasure in entertaining and having events in the home that included close friends and family. She was easy to talk to, down to earth and always knowledgeable of current events. She was recognized for her style of fashion, charisma and her gift of gab! Mother Smalls took great pride in being the "District Mother" at Holy Temple Church. She was active in the "Senior Connection' and she regularly reached out to the seniors during their times of need and during special events. She served as the Mother over communion, attending fellowships, convocations, and all events associated with United Holiness Church. Mother Bertie Smalls leaves to cherish her memories and continue her legacy, her devoted husband, John; one son, John Smalls Jr and his wife Keisha Smalls, two daughters, Rondrea Ross and Toya Smalls; a brother and sister who preceded her in homegoing: Oliver Weston and Marilyn Weston; brother: Johnny and wife Hattie Weston; Uncle Herbert Ford and wife Pearl; sister-in-Iaws: Pearl (Oliver) Weston and Lorraine Smalls; and 5 beautiful grandchildren. She also leaves nieces & nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
