Sonja Butts

Sonja Yvette Butts entered eternal rest on Monday, June 7, 2021. She was born on March 18, 1970 in Portsmouth, VA to the late Clifton T. Butts, Sr. and Pastor Georgia L. Moore-Butts. Sonja accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church as a youth. As an adult Sonja joined arms in ministry with her mother the late Pastor Georgia L. Butts at First Corinthian Baptist in Portsmouth, Va. As a member of First Corinthian Baptist, she served as the church clerk and member of the choir. She also had a convalescent home ministry where on a weekly basis she would facilitate Wednesday Night Bible study and Sunday evening worship services. In 2019, Sonja joined Blanchard’s Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Hobbsville, NC where Apostle Lewis Fisher is Senior Pastor. Sonja was a faithful member until her death. Sonja graduated from I.C. Norcom High School in Portsmouth, Va in 1988. While in high school she was active in the high school band. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Criminal Justice Degree from Shaw University-Raleigh, NC. Sonja was also a proud member of the Beta Rho Chapter (Spring 91) of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Shaw University in Raleigh, NC. Sonja attended law school for 1 year at North Carolina Central University, Durham, NC. During her time in Durham (1994-2006) she was an Executive Administrator for IBM. From 2006-2013, Sonja worked for Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Va. as an administrator. From 2017 until her death, Sonja continued her career as a director in healthcare for Support Profession at Circle of Friends, LLC. Sonja truly loved children and was a long-term substitute teacher in the Portsmouth Public School System. To cherish her memory, Sonja leaves a brother Lloyd Christopher Moore (Sacheen) of Wagram, NC.; (Christina, Lloyd Jr., Colin, Lidio, Julia and LeeAnn), twin sister Tonja Y. Fisher (Apostle Lewis Fisher) of Suffolk, Va; 3 nieces (Ariana, Sariah, and Deborah), 1 -nephew (Paul), and a brother, Rev. Clifton T. Butts, Jr. of Ruther Glen, Va. Sonja is also survived by sister-in-law Teresa Faulks-Moore of Portsmouth, VA and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.
