Richard Norman

Richard Norman was born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 18,1927, to Robert and Love Lee Norman. He had four brothers and one sister. He attended Du Sable High School and graduated in 1944. He served his country proudly in the Army Air Corp and was honorably discharged in 1946 as a Corporal. After Military service, he worked for the United States Postal Service for 38 years and retired in 1984. Throughout his postal career, he held the position of Letter Carrier, Union Representative and ran for the office of President of the United States Postal Union. He attended Roosevelt University where he completed course work in Sociology and Economics. He then moved to San Diego, CA, where he worked as a "Base Police Officer" at Point Loma Naval base for 10 years. This was followed by another (4) years with Cloud Nine Shuttle Service. There, he was recognized for many outstanding contributions to the company and his colleagues. Although he held many distinguished positions throughout his life, he was most proud of his writings. As a deep thinker, his thoughts were explicitly recorded in his writings: The House that Claude Built. Say it Ain't so, and Focus on Reason. Later in life, he started a Non-Profit Organization: "Americans of African Decent". The mission of the organization was to uplift African American youth and instill the pride, dignity, and self -respect inherent in African American culture. He lectured at various colleges, universities, and rellgious institutions, giving speeches and presentations designed to empower the youth of today. He was also an accomplished musician. He studied and played the guitar for over 40 years. His talent was displayed professionally at selected Night Clubs and venues throughout Chicago, San Diego, and Virginia. Lastly, he (and his wife) traveled throughout the world. They visited Africa, Spain, and Mexico. When in the states, he also found time to coach Little League Baseball, mentor "at risk" youth, and teach anyone interested to play chess. Richard Norman loved life as well as a good game of chess, where he very seldom lost. On Tuesday morning at 1O:30am, Richard (our DAD) went home to be with the Lord. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years (Gloria Norman). He leaves behind two children: Craig and Shawn Norman, along with four lovely granddaughters: Tyawn, Taylor, Ciarra and Kenya.
