Phyllis F. Hammonds

Phyllis Lorraine Freeman Hammonds, 85, of Portsmouth, VA who was born in Salem, VA to the late Edna Mae Jarvis and Eugene Marshall Freeman, slipped peacefully away to be with the Lord on Monday, June 8, 2020. She was predeceased by her ex-husband and children's father Lee Hammonds. Phyllis leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter Michele Hammonds Hinton (Jeffrey); daughter, Monique, son Paul Hammonds and daughter, Tiffany Hammonds and 2 great grandchildren, Mason and Malasia; son Michael Hammonds (Cheryl) 2 sons, Michael Jr. and Myles and daughter Kirsten; son Mark (Shawna) and daughters Dora Rene Frost, Ayanah Hammonds, Ameenah Hunter, Amiya Hunter and Amare Hunter; 1 uncle, John Tommy of Washington, DC; four special friends, Doris and Roy McNeal, Helen, Eunice Thrower and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous friends. Phyllis graduated valedictorian in 1953 from Carver High School. She continued with her studies to complete a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1957 from Virginia State College. Phyllis retired from Portsmouth Public Schools after 31 years of educating elementary school students in 1991. She accepted Christ at a young age and continued in the faith as a member of Zion Baptist Church and then later she joined Saint Mark Missionary Baptist Church in Portsmouth, VA where her ministry continued with ministry of service with the Senior Usher Board. She was a member of the Red Hatters and XYZ Club. Before becoming ill, you could often find her mall walking at Chesapeake Square Mall or exercising at the Parker Center with the other seniors in Portsmouth. Mom also enjoyed reading the newspaper and playing Word Search. After raising her 4 children, mom enjoyed traveling with her special friends we have grown to know as "The Golden Girls". Phyllis was a only child, and the backbone of her family, often sharing her words of wisdom or tutoring her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her family can all find comfort in remembering her huge heart and no-no-nonsense advice, along with her fashionista sense of style in clothes, shoes and matching accessories.
