Mary Katherine Combs

Mary Katherine Combs also affectionately called “Luellen” of Chesapeake, Virginia, reunited with Our Heavenly Father on Tuesday, April 21, 2020. Mary was born on November 6, 1938, in Plymouth, North Carolina, the daughter of Joseph Johnson and Iona Rouson Johnson. Mary was a loving wife, a devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Things you may not know about Mary. She loved to garden and cooked everything she grew. She loved to watch Life Time movies on Sunday afternoons. She also loved to read, VC Andrews was one of her favorite authors. She helped the elderly, and the sick and shut-in by running their errands and she also visited the elderly in nursing homes. While living in Babenhausen, Germany she was on the committee that helped Americans prepare for an evacuation if there was an invasion, volunteered at the orphanage, and helped feed the homeless. She received numerous awards in recognition for her volunteer service and dedication to the US Army. She was married for sixty-three years and has twenty-one great-grandchildren! She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph Johnson and Iona Rouson Johnson of Roper, NC and her siblings: Alberta House of Akron, OH, Peal King of Mt. Vernon, NY, Evelyn Webb of Mt. Vernon, NY, Jeraldine Davenport of Roper, NC, Joseph Johnson of Roper, NC, Carnegie Johnson of Yonkers, NY, Artis Johnson of Roper, NC, Rudolph Johnson of Roper, NC, and Wade Johnson of Lexington, NC. She is survived by her loving husband, Retired Command Sergeant Major Robert Lee Combs, Jr. and seven loving children: Reginold Devon Combs of Atlanta, GA, Shirley Combs of Chesapeake, VA, Dr. Delores Ann Barnes (Mervin Barnes) of Houschton, GA, Cynthia Smith (James Smith) of Portsmouth, VA, Pamela Boone (Freddie Boone) of Portsmouth, VA, Dr. Vera Campbell (Chande Campbell) of Suffolk, VA, and Robert Combs III of Chesapeake, VA. Her grandchildren Tameeka Combs-Smith, Raeshanda Wilson, Regina Combs, Reginold Devon Combs, Jr., Ashley Barnes, John Gray (Michelle Gray), Sharonda Gray, Ronald Gray, Freddie Boone, Devon Boone, Chande Campbell, and Morgan Campbell. Her great-grandchildren Davion Smith, Dimetrick Smith, Jaelynn Perry, Nicholas High, Gabrielle Combs, Naomi Neal, Cedric Scott, Jr., John Gray, Jamari Gray, Jamiya Gray, Jayla Gray, Jordyn Gray, Madison Thomas, Trezure Rountree, Eilam Rountree, Zye Rountree, Corey Riddick, Jr., Royal Hurdle, Remi Hurdle, Makenzie Boone, and Devon Boone. Her memories will be cherished by two siblings, Vera Johnson of Mt. Vernon, NY and O’Conel Johnson of Roper, NC and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. ***The Funeral Home is following the CDC guidelines and are only allowing 10 persons at the funeral and only 10 persons at a time in the building for the visitation.
