Jacqueline Tyler Brown

Jacqueline Tyler Brown, affectionately known as "Jackie", gained her wings on July 19, 2018. On May 6, 1953, Jacqueline LaVerne Tyler was born in Portsmouth, Va. She was the daughter of William P. Tyler, Sr. and Margaret G. Tyler, and the younger sister to William P. Tyler, Jr. Jackie graduated from I. C. Norcom High School in 1971. After graduating high school, Jackie attended Durham Technical Community College, in North Carolina and obtained an Associate degree in Business Administration in 1973. She moved back to Virginia and earned a Bachelor's degree (1975) in Business from Norfolk State College (now known as Norfolk State University). She pursued graduate studies at Norfolk State, Old Dominion and Virginia Commonwealth University. During her years at NSC, Jackie joined a bowling league, which became her favorite hobby. Jackie moved to Richmond, Va. in the summer of 1979 to pursue a career in business administration. She also continued her passion for bowling by joining a league in Richmond. Her working career included, Project Coordinator, Southeastern Tidewater OIC (1977 - 1979); Administrative Assistant with Norfolk State University, Evening College (1975-1977); and Human Services Coordinator for Job Training program in the City of Richmond until she retired in 2003. After moving to Richmond, she married Willie J. Brown Jr. on August 23, 1984. Jackie was a member of the Norfolk State National Alumni Association, and member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She was also the first president of the Richmond Association of Black College and University Alumni, Inc. and received multiple accolades for her community service. Jackie is survived by her son, Omari J. Brown (Nickita and their daughter Brynn), Jacksonville, N.C.; her daughter Kamilah S. Kelly (Jaren), Raleigh, N.C.; her brother William P. Tyler, Jr. (Pamula), Suffolk, Va., and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jackie was preceded in death by her spouse Willie J. Brown Jr., Norfolk, Va. (2006). Jackie was a devout and good standing member of New Deliverance Evangelistic, Church since 2001. Her faith and her friendships strengthened her walk with Christ. To all who knew her, Jackie always left you with a laugh and a smile after every conversation.
