George L. Anderson

George Lee Anderson, 82, transitioned from earth to glory peacefully on Thursday, December 15, 2016 with his loving and devoted family by his bedside. George was born on December 19, 1933 to the late Moses and Lena Anderson in Norfolk County, Virginia. He was the eldest of three children. He was predeceased by his sister; Ella Mae Anderson; his brother; Robert Anderson; and son; Vincent “Brusier” Anderson. George Anderson was a member of Norfolk County High Class of 1954. George served in the United States Army before he was honorably discharged in 1958. He then met his lifelong partner Marion (Gause) Anderson, whom he married in 1960. As years went on, George and Marion began their family of four daughters and one son. George began working as a commercial driver for the government as a civil servant for the military. After twenty-four years of devoted and diligent work, George retired to continue his life as a family man and a model member of the city of Portsmouth. He was actively involved in many service capacities that include serving on the Brighton Reunion Committee, member of the Brighton and Prentis Park community neighborhood watch and member of the Lebanon Masonic Lodge. George was also a devout and unwavering member of the Prince of Peace Church where he served as Head Trustee and as an Usher. George never failed to greet a guest or hand out a program, even during the times he had to remain seated due to his health. For six years, George Anderson worked as a traffic guard for Portsmouth City Public Schools, a job he loved and appreciated. In George’s spare time he enjoyed watching his Steelers play, fishing, traveling, working in his garage, caring for and enjoying the company of his family both immediate and extended, and watching his beloved neighborhood from the rocking chair on his porch. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-six years, Marion Anderson; along with four daughters; Shelby Carswell (Robert D.), Vernita Anderson-Manning (Willie), Brenda Williams (Darryl), and Iris Carrington; nine grandchildren, LaShana, Amber, Stephanie, Courtney, DeAndre, Arian, Jenee’, Joshua, and Christina; three great-grandchildren, Kaiya, Peyton, and Elijah; sister in laws; Sarah Anderson and Barbara Holloman; brother in law; Anthony Gause (Betty); his furry companion, Gracie, and many other loving nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and family. George Anderson was a man who donned many hats and filled countless roles. To some he was strong, brave, determined and level-headed. Yet to others, he was kind, giving, nurturing, humble and a comedian. To those that knew him the best, he was the most perfect blend of the two. To witness the life of this great man, was to marvel at the creation of a man after God’s own heart. George touched the lives of everyone he came into contact with and had a personality you could never forget. To some George was the only father figure they have ever known. No matter what brick George Anderson laid in the foundation of your life, his legacy will live on through all the lives he has touched. A fuller heaven does not mend a broken heart and all its ties, but that broken heart will mend one day again…George was a hero, a super hero to be exact, and will always be remembered as such.
